MEASURE YOUR PRIEST. Or measure a stole he/she uses. We found we needed a 98 inch stole, 7 inches wide.

CHOOSE A LITURGICAL COLOR. We chose red, because it was for an ordination.

Using 4 ply knitting worsted and size 6 needles, cast on 21 stitches. Work in the Shawl Pattern of K3 P 3 K3 for 40 inches.
TO FORM NECKBAND: Change to K2 P2 ribbing. Decrease 1 stitch in the first row of ribbing in order to have 20 stitches on the needle. Work in ribbing for 18 inches.
TO FINISH THE STOLE: Resume the Shawl pattern, increasing 1 stitch in the first row in order to have 21 stitches on the needle.
Work until second side is 40 inches, and piece measures 98 inches. Cast off.

At this point, you may appliqué or embroider a cross or other symbol on the two ends of the stole, and at center back. Or you may work the design with contrasting yarn on a bobbin.
