Prayer Shawl Workshop/Retreat @Copyright 2008

“You created every part of me, knitting me in my Mother’s womb.
For such handiwork, I praise You. Awesome this great wonder!” Psalm 139:13-14
This
workshop is highly recommended to serve as a model for groups who want to bring
the Prayer Shawl Ministry to their faith communities. Each group that embraces
this ministry adapts it to their own particular guidelines. Besides the obvious
reasons of comfort during illness or grief, the shawls can be given for times of
joy and celebration, such as: nursing shawls for new mothers, baptisms,
birthdays, bridal gifts, ordinations, upon entering a nursing home, rites of
passage, etc.
The workshop experience is about 3 hours in length, depending on the number of
participants and scheduling for lunch/break. Participants are asked to bring
their own knitting/crocheting supplies, (see: Instruction page for details) a
bag lunch, and a journal. The host group supplies meeting space, tea lights,
beverages and desserts. We provide information packets for each person. It is
recommended that new knitters/crocheters have a basic grasp of
knitting/crocheting techniques.
The workshop can be planned as an ecumenical and/or interfaith event, bringing
people together from various denominations and/or religions. A host group or
groups can sponsor the event, extending the workshop invitation to faith
communities in their area. It becomes a wonderful opportunity to meet your
neighbors, bonding over the love of knitting/crocheting and the desire to reach
out to others!
